Church World Service Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services opens Harrisburg office

Church World Service Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services which has had a branch office since the mid-eighties in Lancaster County, has now opened a new location in Harrisburg.

The nonprofit opened the new office at 2101 N. Front St., Building 3, Suite 301 in Harrisburg. The office served its first clients last month and opened the new office earlier this month.

“The new Harrisburg office will offer newly arrived refugees, from Afghanistan and beyond, comprehensive case management and employment services aimed at building a foundation for long-term self-sufficiency and success in the United States,” the organization said in a news release last year.

The office also offers basic needs support, case management, cultural orientation, health access assistance, and job preparation and placement help.

“Most people are aware of the humanitarian disasters in Ukraine and Afghanistan, but we can’t lose sight of the other long-term issues from other parts of the world,” Alex Swan, the Harrisburg office director for Church World Service Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services, said in a recent news release.

Swan cites ongoing refugee needs in Myanmar, Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia and Central America, among other places.

Church World Service Refugee Resettlement and Immigration Services will launch their new Harrisburg office with an informational event and screening of the documentary, Flee at Midtown Cinema, 250 Reilly St., Harrisburg from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. Flee is a documentary about one Afghan refugee’s journey to face his past.

The event is designed to inform the Harrisburg community about the work CWS-Harrisburg does in helping refugees find their new home in the midstate.

“The community here is special,” Swan said. “They’ve already welcomed several Afghan families to Harrisburg and Lancaster. We see the official launch as an opportunity to let the rest of the community know how they can tap in and help their new neighbors.”

In addition to the screening, the event will feature several former refugee speakers, who will talk about their experiences resettling in the area. The screening is free, but interested community members must register at the following link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/film-screening-community-appreciation-tickets-301491939507.
